If you are a person who loves to fish, you’d most likely want to own a wooden boat because you’ll be using it often for your hobby. Boat building is one of the oldest branches of engineering concerned with constructing the hulls of boats and for sail boats, the masts, spars and rigging.

Sailing on your own-made boat makes you feel proud and enthusiastic. Indeed boating is appealing to the hearts of many people around the world. Most of them consider boating as very relaxing and a very good reason to unwind from everyday routine. While to some, boating is a luxury. Not everyone can afford to go out and buy a boat or even renting one for mere fishing cost a lot, too.

Now with the help of so many boat plans available, almost anyone can have the chance to make their own wooden boat. If you have interests in do-it-yourself projects, then definitely you can make a boat by just following the instructions on how to build a wooden boat. The first thing that you need to procure in building a boat is wood. A 1″ x 4″ lumber will do, but must avoid pressed wood or plywood. You will need to get enough lumber for the bottom of the boat and a little extra that is around 18″ tall. An extra wood for decking a seating is also needed. Make sure that you have all the necessary tools listed on the instructions.

Then follow the step by step instruction on how to build a wooden boat. The website that offers most complete instructional tools and methods is Plans 4 Boats.

Are DIY boat plans right for you? If so, that is great because you are gonna love building your own boat! I myself have enjoyed the DIY boat building experience. I’ve always liked building things and working on DIY projects. I really enjoyed working on my own boat.

Families also have a great time working on building their own boat. Working together on the boat is a good way to grow closer as a family. Building and sailing on a boat that you and your family built together is a great feeling of accomplishment for everyone.

Many people think that building their own boat is something they would probably enjoy but are not sure how to go about it. They may do a search on Google to find a boat plan, but they get frustrated because there really aren’t any great plans to find for free online. You see, they’re not looking for the right kind of boat plans. You are going to have to look long and hard for quality DIY boat plans on the Internet. You don’t walk into a DIY shop and get a building project manual for free, why would it be any different online?

You are going to have to shell out a little bit of cash to get quality DIY boat plans. But don’t worry, most of the ones I’ve seen online don’t cost any more than , and you get a TON of different boat plans to choose from. Boat designing programs are sometimes also given as a free bonus so you can make your own boat plans on your computer! Now that is cool!

So, if you want to get your boat-building project rolling this weekend. I suggest you take your time, compare some boat building products online, find one that suits your needs, and then go for it! You can build it! It is really all about the plans; as long as you purchase a quality set of plans that is going to walk you through the process one step at a time, you’ll be fine. f you read the title of this article and answered ‘Yes’, this this article is going to be right up your street, or should that be river? If you’ve ever wanted to build your own boat, then building your own row boat is a great place to start, but of course it’s only natural to ask, ‘where do I find quality information on how to build a row boat?’

With so many boat building sites on the internet, it can be difficult to know just which way to turn, but hopefully I’ll have you in the workshop and on the water in next to no time. Now having mentioned the workshop, this will be one of your first considerations. Do you have somewhere to build your boat?

Luckily for most, finding somewhere to build a small row boat shouldn’t be too difficult and the garage will become the boat builders den for a while! You’ll want to make sure it’s big enough though which leads to the next point.

You’ll want get your hands on a good set of high quality plans. This will detail the exact dimensions, so you can decide if you have the necessary space. You may be able to find instructions on how to build a row boat and believe that this will be enough for you to successfully complete your project. However, (and not wanting to seem I’m on my high horse here) with my knowledge and experience I somehow doubt it though!

By all means, feel free to prove me wrong, but a good set of step by step pictorial plans will always make this whole process a whole lot easier and set you up for success, rather than leave you drowning in your sorrows.

Next, you will want to get hold of the necessary tools and wood for your build. When building a row boat, these tools won’t need to be anything too fancy. Saws, clamps, screwdrivers etc., that you would expect to find in the standard tool box will probably suffice. If there are any particular tools you need, these should normally be detailed in your boat plans, hence another reason for getting these plans first.

For the wood needed to complete your project, you should be able to acquire it from your local lumber yard. A simple rowing boat will often be made from plywood, which is widely available, although it should be noted here that you should buy marine grade ply to be sure it’s suitable for use on the water. Otherwise, you may find you have to apply a full cover of epoxy resin, which can be expensive. You will also want to make sure that the wood you use is as free from knots as possible.

Once everything has been done in these preparation stages, it’s then time to get on with the actual build itself. If you have followed everything I have said up until now, this should be a simple task of following your boats building plans as they guide you through the process and before you know it, you’re boat will be ready. Then all that is left is to test the boat on the water and make any final alterations, before fully taking to the water for your first satisfying row in a boat you have built yourself.

For more information on how to build a row boat, or for similar boat building topics, please feel free to visit my website. You’re always welcome aboard! Just click on the links below. Also, If you enjoyed this article or found it useful, please take a moment to leave a comment and let me know. I would love to know your thoughts, so just drop me a line if you have time.

Do You Dream of Sailing — Now You Can Build A Sailboat

Sailing is one of the best ways to relax.  It gives your hands something to do, and it is as if the wind blows away all your stress.  It is one of my favorite things to do.

It’s funny now that I think about it, but my wife claims she fell in love with sailing, and then me — in that order when I first took her sailing on my little 22 foot sailboat over 14 years ago.  The hull was fiberglass, so I used to call it my tupperware boat.

We had great times on that little boat, and frankly, sailing is one of the ways that I like to totally de-stress.  Seriously, when I’m out on the water, I have no cares whatsoever.  Any problems or issues I may be struggling with, disappear in the wind.  There’s something very calming about being on the water that doesn’t compare to anything else.

I was never one of those camping guys, though I enjoy being in nature (we live on ten acres in the country), but being on the water is great.  With the right kind of cookstove, an ice chest, and a removable head storage unit, your little sailboat is totally self-contained.  If you like fishing, your meal is easily found on the end of a hook!  If you’ve got a sailboat with a doghouse — you’re set for an overnight get-a-way.

When I had this little sailboat, I lived in the East Bay of California, which is right on the delta where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers eventually feed into San Francisco Bay, one of the best sailing venues I have experienced!  But I didn’t need to go to the Bay to sail.  The Delta provides thousands of miles of good sailing waters with lots of little islands to pull into for quiet and privacy.

I had to sell my sailboat because we live so far away from the Delta now (we’re closer to all the headwaters that feed into the Sacramento River) but lately I’ve been dreaming about building my own sailboat.

After building my three-story house myself with help from my wife (a three-year project) I can found out how easy it is to build most anything!  But I was surprised to discover that building a sailboat is a lot easier than building a house, and even someone with little or no skills can build a sailboat simply by following along with these easy boat building construction plans.

I found these plans online — and wouldn’t you know the guy’s Danish — like me.  (I guess water’s in our gene pool).  The Danish have been building boats since long before Columbus’ time, being the land of the Vikings.

But Daniel’s plans are the real deal — complete with a materials list and step-by-step designs.  With over 200 design plans for every kind of boat you can think of, this package deal is a steal!  In addition, he provides a lot of free bonuses that ups the value of the package incredibly.

I’m excited to get started on my sailboat plans and looking forward to getting out on the water again.  If you’ve been toying with the idea of building a sailboat, or any boat for that matter, check out his site by using the links below.

How To Build A Sailboat

One of the best ways to relax your busy mind is to give your hands something to do.  And if you’re like me and enjoy sailing, maybe it’s time you thought about building a sailboat.  Follow these “how to build a sailboat” steps and in no time at all you’ll be sailing along without a care in the world.

Choose The Right Sailboat Design

It’s critical that you choose a sailboat plan and design that meets your needs.  If you plan on staying overnight on your sailboat, then you will want a plan that has a doghouse.  If you’re just planning to use your sailboat during the day, then this will change what sailboat design you use.  Just remember to keep in mind that whatever your wood working skill level, if you follow the steps, one step at a time, you should be fine.

Buy The Materials

With a good set of sailboat plans, you will have the material list provided to you.  While building a boat yourself, without a kit will definitely be more inexpensive than if you build it from a kit — don’t buy the wrong kind or “cheap” materials.  You don’t want your work to go to waste because you decided to save on wood.  Be sure to buy “marine” labeled materials to ensure your materials are built for water usage.

Mark Your Plan On The Wood

Be sure to mark your plywood with the pattern before you begin cutting to ensure that you are making the right cuts.  You do this by one of two ways: using the exact measurements or trace the pattern onto the plywood before cutting it.  Tracing the pattern is the quickest way — but using exact measurements is defintely the most accurate way of marking your plywood.

Cutting And Assembling

Be careful when you cut your plywood and follow the plans exactly when you go to assemble your sailboat.  Remember to let all parts to dry (where you have used epoxy) before moving to the next step.  It is critical that the epoxy has the time to cure properly, otherwise you might have leaks.

Seal All Your Joints Inside and Out

Use fiberglass tape and epoxy to seal all the joints and seams of your sailboat.  Be thorough and start on the inside of the boat first.  Once it has completedly dried and cured, go on to seal the outside of the boat.

Add Your Details

At this juncture, you will add any of your desired details to the sailboat, like your doghouse or storage areas.  Be sure you know what you need to store so that your storage areas are large enough.  When you are finished, you MUST use a good quality marine paint and allow it to dry thoroughly.  Marine paint costs more than regular paint because it has special water-repelling qualities.

Assemble The Sails And Rigging

In your plans you will have a step-by-step procedure for installing the mast and assembling your sales.  After that is complete, install your rigging, and make sure it doesn’t get hung up and you have used the correct line (not rope) for marine applications.

There is no greater satisfaction that enjoying something you have made with your own hands.  It provides you a sense of self-accomplishment as well as years of pure stress-relief fun when you learn how to build a sailboat.

I found these great plans that details how to build a sailboat easily. You don’t even have to have woodworking skills to start out, it’s that simple. To find out more visit: YouCanFixItYourself.com  Written by Richard A. Hansen

Did You Know That You Can Build A Sailboat Yourself!

Did You Know That You Can Build A Sailboat Yourself!

You can build a sailboat with little to no wood-working skills by following a simple, easy and detailed step-by step plan.

The critcal part of this process is ensuring you have the right plan to build a sailboat.  You need to get the plans from a trusted provider with a money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.

If you want to build a sailboat, you don’t go to a carpenter to get the plans. Yes, he may have good wood-working skills, but building a boat needs an understanding of the correct epoxy and materials to use to ensure that your sailboat is sound and will not sink.

To build a sailboat, after you have the plans, make sure that you only buy top quality materials suitable for the water.  Some boats are wooden, and some will be fiberglass (and working with fiberglass isn’t that hard), but whatever medium you work with, if you buy cheap, it will show in your finished product.

Remember that you will be saving tons of money by building your sailboat yourself.

By following each step, completing it satisfactorily and not rushing through the process, allowing all your seams and joints to dry and cure will allow you to enjoy your sailboat for years to come.

Building a sailboat is not an overnight process, and working in the shop, with a little music going, and a cold beer when you have finished for the day, is one of the best things life has to offer.  There is a personal satisfaction I achieve when working with my hands.

I find that when I have a project that I work on that requires me to be physical, its as if my mind goes quiet and all those hassles of the past week or day just seem to disappear.  I don’t know what it is, but working with my hands and building things gives me great pleasure.  Building my own sailboat is something I’ve always wanted to do.

If you make a mistake, you can usually fix it pretty easily, but if you follow the plans and check off each step, you’re sure to succeed.  I know that some guys are afraid to try things like this, or are in too much of a hurry to complete a step by step project like this — but if you have the desire to succeed — and put in time when you can (be sure you have room in your garage or shop to leave your project up for a while) it won’t be long before you’ll be sailing along in your own sailboat — that you built!

The best place to get sailboat plans is from someone that has experience in wood-working and building boats.  I was very glad when I found this website — this guy comes from a long line of boat-builders and traces his ancestry back to the Vikings — the best boat builders on the planet.

These guys were sailing the seas when many other folks were still huddling around campfires.  The Vikings were known as conquerors because they had some of the most sturdy boats around — and they were able to take their horses on board with them to go anywhere they wanted — and they traveled far and wide on these boats.

If you’ve been toying with the idea of building a sailboat, or want to build a sailboat, then follow the links below.  This guy offers a huge package that you can download or have sent to you on DVD plus a lot of extra bonuses worth over 7.

The entire package right now is available for under — but I don’t know how long that will last.  He’s got plans and designs for all kinds of boats from cabin-cruisers to wooden boats.  Whether you want to build a skiff, a dory, a canoe, kayak, sailboat, or cabin cruiser — this is the place to get your plans today!

Tips On How To Build A Dinghy

Tips On How To Build A Dinghy

Dinghy is one of the oldest type of boat design that is still around presently, and with good reasons too. It has utilized many different ways so to anyone looking to build their own boat, I strongly suggest learning how to build a dinghy.

Dinghy are mostly used as an open sailing boats. It is most suitable for beginner training in sailing as it quickly responds to maneuvers. It can come with an outboard motor but most are rowboats.

To build a dinghy several consideration have to be kept in mind. A few of these are:

BUDGET

The amount you set as your budget will directly affect the type, size as well as the materials you will be using for the dinghy. Therefore, it is best to come up with a specific and reasonable amount that you are willing to spend for the project. Building a dinghy should be cheaper by far than buying one, so looking around and checking the price of ready made dinghy would help you set an earmark for your budget.

TYPES AND SIZE

Dinghies sizes can range in length from 2-7 meters. And they come in varying types depending on the purpose that its made for. Dinghies are designed to sail, motor, tow and row. It is also used as a lifeboat because of this multi-functionality.

Also, to build a dinghy, you can also use materials like marine plywood, aluminum, fiberglass and wood. However, most generally prefer to build a plywood boat.

PROPULSION

Depending on its function, dinghy may be powered by a motor, sail or a simple oar can be used for propulsion.

If you wish to use a motor for your dinghy, a good option is an outboard motor. Two horsepower per meter is very good motor for a dinghy.Oars are used for rowing dinghies while sail are usually used in racing dinghies.

DESIGN

The best way to start building a dinghy is to work with a very good dinghy plan. It enables you to go through the process  of building your own dinghy without the unnecessary hitches that usually come with not having a complete plan for the project.

I’ve benefited from a step-by-step instruction from a boat plan so I strongly suggest you do the same. Personally, I’ve used a very helpful plan with a very detailed instruction that and with the pictures that leaves nothing to the imagination.

Build A Skiff – Things To Consider

Build A Skiff – Things To Consider

For anyone planning to build a boat, you may want to consider learning how to build a skiff. Skiff are used for many different purposes although it is originally used as a sea going fishing boat.

To those who are just starting out building a skiff, I would suggest that you build a skiff with simpler design. You can add features later on. This suggestion is just based on my experience and I’ve experienced the frustration of having a supposedly 3 week project turn into a 2 month boat building simply because I’ve deviated from the original boat plans and wanted to add many features.

To get the job faster though, having a well-designed plan and going over the things you need to consider and the requirements would help a lot in cutting the building time of any project. Some of the thing you need to go over are:

BUDGET

Whether I am building a boat or any woodworking piece, even the simple ones, I always go at it with a definite amount I am comfortable spending on the project. I suggest you do the same for the simple reason that you will be able to keep a tight rein on cash and you wouldn’t have to spend more than you have to.

Another reason is, if budget is high on your list of priorities, a definite amount will help you determine the materials you will be using and the design you are going to use.

MATERIAL

As discussed earlier your choice of materials would depend on budget as well as you skills, needs and preference.

Some materials used for skiff building are wood, aluminum, fiberglass and polyethylene. All have strong points over all the others as well as some drawbacks. And in choosing which materials to use, you may want to consider both.

Another thing is you can also choose the materials based on what you are most comfortable handling. For example, if you have some background in woodworking, woo may be the best material for you. Or if you are a welder, aluminum will be the best choice.

TYPE

The thing with building a skiff is you can outfit it for any purpose you have in mind. Skiffs are originally designed to be a row boat, however, it evolved so now you can have a skiff designed for sailing or you can have a skiff powered with outboard motor.

Before you build a skiff, you must have a clear idea what type you plan to build. This way you can have a skiff design that works around this purpose.

DESIGN

I highly recommend anyone who want to build their own skiff to have a very workable boat plan beforehand. It is ver cost-effective in the long run as it would help avoid mistakes and waste materials. It is also time saving in this sense.

I’ve personally used and benefitted from a very detailed boat plan, so I strongly suggest you check it out here:
